1. Supervise Constantly
- Always stay within arm’s reach of young children.
- Never rely solely on lifeguards, floaties, or older siblings for supervision.
2. Enroll in Swim Lessons
- Start swim lessons early—British Swim School offers lessons for children as young as 3 months.
- Focus on water safety skills, not just stroke techniques.
3. Teach Water Rules
- No running near pools.
- No diving in shallow water.
- Always ask permission before going near water.
4. Be Vigilant Around All Water Sources
- Bathtubs, buckets, kiddie pools, and even toilets can be dangerous to small children.
- Empty containers and supervise bath time closely.
5. No Swimming Alone
- Teach kids they must always swim with an adult present—even if they’re confident swimmers.
6. Secure Pools and Hot Tubs
- Install four-sided fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates.
- Use pool alarms and covers as extra layers of protection.
7. Learn CPR
- In an emergency, every second counts. CPR can save a life while waiting for emergency services.
- Take a class through the Red Cross or a local community center.
8. Stay Focused
- Avoid distractions like phones or socializing while supervising.
- Designate a “Water Watcher” during gatherings. British Swim School gives water watcher cards to all new families
9. Be Safe in Open Water
- Use US Coast Guard approved life jackets for boating, lakes, or ocean activities—regardless of swimming ability.
- Teach kids about currents, tides, and drop-offs.
10. Know the Signs of Drowning
- Drowning is silent. Look for gasping, head tilted back, or arms flailing at water level.
- If in doubt—check it out immediately.
- Teach kids; Reach, Throw, Don't GO!
